Waiting for Milan Expo – When Korea wants to build a network: meeting delegate of Ministry of Foreign Affairs

It could sound strange when you receive an email with special invitation to introduce your activity and your network directly to the director of public diplomacy division of Ministry of Foreign Affairs… more interesting if we’re talking about of Ministry of Republic of Korea and the meeting has been hold at Korean General Consulate in Milan.

It means that something is changing at the same time with our perception of being in the middle of cross cultural dynamics that are influencing a lot social relations and economies all around the world. For me and for other groups that today represent something in connection with East Asia and Korea it was the clear demonstration about how Italy or other EU countries should improve skills on making own presence more familiar with international issues trying to involve also people, professionals and society in general; ‘cause the building of conscious inter nation community starts from the individual and that’s why the role of institutions are really important to facilitate such education.

By the way, the purpose of the meeting was to listen which projects are going to be managed about korean culture, korea language and also about general promotion of that it has been called “Korean Wave 한류 – 韓流” and refers to the frame is becoming famous mixing pop culture, music and cinema from South Korea. In particular through my speech I wanted to make the group of representatives of Ministry aware about the second step is going to follow the pop-culture’s boom: with such cultural – joint there will be also in Italy an improvement of image about Korea into more “organic vision”, I mean something like an holistic perception that will bring our “fan of Korea” more aware about new and different ways to approach and live a passion called Korea.

korean_home

We must be ready to prepare structured services that can support such interest and make years of studies and researches about Korean system, language, economy, culture something orfreally concrete for careers and professions or for business communication among economic players between Asia and Europe.

I mean, even if K-pop music is very interesting cultural – social phenomenon and korean movies directors express very particular vision about esthetic and society in general that we are glad to appreciate for its features, I wanted to point out as Korea represents also a very special country that is going to introduce years of intense history built between two hard partners / fighters like China and Japan and that nowadays is going to embrace new vision of introducing productive and corporate system all around the world. It represents a place where now it s gonna be possible start dealing with, in particular if we got awareness of what South Korea represents, its booming economy and the characteristics of chaebol system.

Korea wants to meet Italy  and it is becoming EU- lover for some issues, and after impressive action played by its corporates now wants to communicate who they are, what culture they have, which mutual opportunities could be shared and more… It was really nice to discuss with the director for international cooperation’s division, Mr Hong Jin -wook, introducing how our Asian Studies Group is going to promote in Italy and in Europe also with our partners in Malta where we are welcoming lot of korean students who are studying english there.

Our mission will start on providing well structured consulting services – system that has to offer information, support and tools to approach Korea starting as students during university age, but also as professionals or corporates that need to plan strategy for their approach or orientation’s service as scouting service as well. On doing that we’re going to keep always on mind like cross culture and mutual respect are the fundamentals which we need to take care about to plan the best communication and relation with korean partners.

We don’t want to be in competition with universities in Italy for oriental studies but we well know that universities cannot provide sometimes quick and effective services for whom needs to re-locate in Korea as post degree students or professionals.

So that’s why we’re more into cooperation’s projects that competition with entities that manage a different position in the educational system (and honestly i think that Universities should think more about other problems than looking to us as competitors).

If we wanna to prepare our national system to be good partner of eastern asia countries we should leave some lobby’s preferences and start thinking like part of same bodies that we need to make on moving fast and on harmonious way… Confucius said well and China.. Japan.. and also Korea.. can bring up their society on cooperative vision. Should we start do the same or not?

Internship for students and young professionals from East Asia: a bridge for Milan Expo 2015

Usually when we think about Expo we immediately are used to refer our perception with companies, business development, research and  technical discussions about progress in general, but most of the times we forget to consider how this event could be great opportunity for high value training programs and mutual networking for young professionals as well.

I joined my first post degree internship in Shanghai 2 years before Olimpic Games of 2008 and you should trust me when I say that  6 months of internship program was one of the most useful experiences I ever got in my life after my previous shocking experiences in Japan and China for studied purposes.

Now around 8 years later, I’m ready to offer something of similar to post degree students from Asia and I’m very excited on being part of such network.

There’re some personalities who well know how EXPO represents first of all great scenario to connect visions, enthusiasm and skills and as cross cultural mediator I really feel it also as best opportunity to share knowledges as advisor and professional.

That’s why I immediately agreed about the offer to include as professional studio in Milano some internship offers for university students and young professionals from East Asia and I’m very pleased to make on focus the activity of EU Networking Centre to boost these opportunities.

Water Expo 2013: new business and research expectations – Strategical Link between World Water Forum in Korea and Milan EXPO 2015 –

Korea is driving fast, leaded by massive Chaebols through direct investments on international market, it is strengthening its role of well structured economy among eastern Asia players. Even if sometimes private industry boosted national image faster than political and institutional actions have done before, during last year, after nomination on February of new president of Republic of Korea, Park Geun-hye, more national leading has been observed in behalf of entrepreneurship.

We can consider the imminent event about water – business forum that is going to take place in Daegu City from 30 of october 2013 as relevant statement of such dimension of well framed cooperation. The aim of such team – play is clear: reinforce international position of South Korea as reliable market on doing business, promote national industry in particular about technical solution and R&D’s activity, focus on important topic like water that represent a substantial theme for economic and geo-political alliances among players of relevant position in the field.

water expo summit

This year’s expo and conference are co-organized by the Korea Water Forum, which is a Korean government agency and think tank in charge of its water-related policy, technological cooperation, and international partnership.

The subsidiary events for this year’s Water Conference include the 6th Challenges in Environmental Science and Engineering (CESE) Conference, the Membrane Society of Korea General Meeting and Autumn Scientific Meeting, the Water Management Symposium and the Water Industry Cluster Vision Forum and Policy Presentation.

The Water Expo Korea is the country’s first and foremost water business-to-business exhibition and conference, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Daegu City, and the organizing committee for the World Water Forum 2015.

During the year of International EXPO in Milan, on april 2015 in Daegu will take place this import event that should be a “strategic link” with Europe and in particular with those fundamentals about research, sustainable development and social contents that will be discussed during the international event in Milan City.  Already more than 500 water experts and high- l evel representatives, including about 150 international participants from 41 countries, participated in the 7th World Water Forum Welcoming Ceremony and the Kick-off Meeting in Seoul and Daegu this year in May.

Big firms in Korea are investing a lot into such ventures in particular for technical destination of water usage, discovering more connections between research, technical application energy’s production. In South Korea the corporate system is still well based on direct investments through share – participations by korean holding in interrelated fields, so that’s why during such forums it could be really interesting and useful get in relation with important players that could support with assisted partnership some scouting / b2b dynamics into the local corporate network.

My professional studio is focusing on specific analysis about players that will join on this session of Water Expo Korea, in particular is introducing to asian partners particular open- issues in behalf of european players that are starting on relocation of technical research, venture opportunities and market – entry dynamics towards Korea and east Asia in general. Water Expo Organizers and Korean Institutions and offices for internationalization’s of companies (KOTRA) are really working well to assist our clients according with specific needs.

The features of new frontier of Business Tours for B2b – Introducing Kobe Healthcare Tour 2014

Too many times we’ve heard about international exhibitions that are important on worldwide scene due their well named reference that offers us the opportunity to collect lot of contacts and being protagonist of direct introduction in the field under international perspective.

Most of the times we realized then that even if the event has been pretty useful to get perception of we were looking for about doing business internationally, usually we cannot make concretely a business dialogue with potential partners cause we’re not directly introduced or we got lost on matching with profiles that fit with our research and structure.

If we add also conjuncture’s elements like international crisis, cut-off about extra expenditures for research and development, less resources concerning staff and managers who could take care about specific issues of business development, you could agree with us when we said that some international exhibitions don’t provide the best useful way to start real B2b mission.

That’s why recently it could have more sense try to join new experience of meeting partners when we try to approach a well framed market with long tradition on development of business dynamics like Japan. My studio is always pretty sensitive about such tools that can support commercial needs on concrete perspective and recently we’re more into consulting and supporting for business tours than usual attendance to international exhibitions with booth and hostess.

Some good features for such kind of service concern for example the opportunity to get “complete tools” to start to introduce yourself:  well advised matching of contacts and operators, business schedule well structured about meetings and inquiries collected by organizers, interpreter but also some elements that you cannot find during regular exhibition like factory visit, check about production and sample testing process, on site official introduction and discussion’s table with experts of the field as moderators (for example unlike the usual “booth – promotions”, during such briefing step we can resolve most of troubles that we are gonna face with during following business deal and that usually cannot being put of focus cause we’re not supported on local discussion with moderators contributions)

TSBT2010 - BELGRADE

Then, the business tour really makes possible to contribute with effective strategy on company – awareness or event’s promotion using cross media and social network’s tools more than usual exhibition like streaming conferences with colleagues and managers who can follow directly the mission by web and inter-act directly during the negotiation or company’s visit, or for example arranging a survey with online campaign which we can directly test some opinions from clients or key leaders about some products or new series of services we’re going to import or analyze for new marketing strategy. I’ve been already more familiar with the perception o that business tours as real “direct dimensions” of planning business mission which comparing with usual attendance to common international exhibition make everything more concrete, quick and cheap for companies.

Beyond that I’ve found companies really satisfied for having reach the goal about learning more on players and productions or for feeling more involved in some business exchanges comparing with “booth – dynamics”, also such conditions introduced by the tours allow company to make cross media and social network’s effects more intensive for team leading on particular projects as long for marketing strategy and general promotion about their activity abroad.

Usually such ventures cost approximately 1000 of dollars or something so less than any basic attendance to 3 days exhibition!

Today we have the opportunity to introduce the next business tour which we’re working about and it concerns very crucial field like Healthcare in Japan from 17 to 20 of March 2014

Core benefits you can experience in this tour :

1. A fully organized business tour in Japan for a much lower cost than done individually.
2. Discuss almost 60-to-80 products and possibilities of ‘Private brand’ Japan manufacturing and other forms of partnership with Japanese beauty healthcare product manufacturers.
3. Various forms of products and modern packaging such as : Drinks, Tablets, Gels, Creams, Powder, Granules, jelly sticks etc. available.
4. Sample dozens of products directly and discuss business on site.
5. Have factory managers (around 10 manufacturers), products and decision-makers in one place & time to allow smooth business flow.
6. All discussions in English with qualified interpreters.
7. Expand international networks and business possibilities by interacting with guests from other markets.
8. Enjoy Japanese culture and beautiful KOBE !

• The total tour package is US$1,250 per person  including three nights hotel stay, airport transfers to and from Kansai Osaka Airport, Meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – Veg and Non-Veg), local transportation, interpreter service, factory visit, product samples, mini-sight-seeing.

Being professional abroad? Perception must start during school years

Being pretty often abroad for business issues is something of very special for whom likes to make comparisons about cities, societies and cultures. When i’m not in Italy, the first thing I’m used to check, as personal interest as well, concerns the promotion of international study experiences developed by schools and academies. I really think that the first step for social common good of nation nowadays must be represented by “international attitude” which students, professionals and of course companies and public administration can interact mutually for concrete development of relations and businesses and such level of inter-action can be reached just only through education.

european-union-flagsWell, as Italian I know that we’re nation of migrants.. and you’ll meet for sure some italians doing something wherever you are thinking about, but even if we were really born on this way (encouraged towards international ventures) we can thank our charisma  more than our school-system. I was analyzing some details about international study exchange opportunities introduced in our country and some comparisons with other EU nations; immediately I understood why sometimes I feel like some conditions for boosting business on international scene don’t fit with our corporate – system.

It’s not for structural matters i think,  but for team – ignorance of dynamics that involve international dialogues among people and professionals. Sometimes our perception of being the center of Europe could be accepted for historical and cultural influence but seems really funny comparing with the chinese vision of being central emperor of the world.. ‘cause they really are!

According with last report presented by “observatory for Interculture of school system and students mobility”, just only 53% of  italian secondary schools introduce international opportunities for study experiences, bad data comparing with Germany 97% – Spain 89 % – Polonia 88 % – France 79% – Sweden 71% etc.  The good consideration about national interest on such activities is the great participation: like Germany, italian schools can involve really large number of students in their didactic projects managed abroad with successful results about contents of the programs and didactic undertaking by students.

Even if common european framework for students international mobility offers some opportunities and information, according with students opinion, professors and school organization don’t seem interested to introduce scholastic exchange experiences with other countries and most of the times italian professors cannot manage fluently foreign language or show direct knowledge about other countries and cultures so they don’t involve with enthusiasm and “personal vision / experience” students and families to join such ventures.

Honestly we’ve also to indicate the difficulty to get access to credit resources which schools could try to support families for financial part some operative costs,  issue that seems less difficult in other countries where public direct investments / partnerships and sponsorships make such occasions for high schools as concrete study opportunities. Once again it seems  really hard to build the net of players that can inter-act for the development of our social system; of course we need to hire professors that can speak 2 or 3  languages as european standards requires as well, but i think that italian will be happy to pay more taxes if this will be support high level of education, well trained professors with international experience, and get money back from some national funds for education and development of international skills that could be introduced during mobility abroad through high school organizations.

As direction of  centre for oriental studies with many branches in Italy and two desks abroad (in EU area and Japan) I’m pretty interested to create good conditions to improve information services cause according with the report, students complain the absolute lack of info about scholarships, study travels, internship , programs, study-work stays. Social networks and internet nowadays offer a new chance to approach world of international community on the web and discover didactic offers and check well detailed pages about universities aborad and more, but it’s not enough and it should be presented by school organizations and professional staff that can support students on making the right choice.

Be part of the world economy needs such awareness and public school must be protagonist on this step. As no profit association we’re going to join some exhibition about education in Italy and abroad, trying to be well referenced organization for promotion of international studies and careers.

SAVE THE DATE: our next attendance at ExpoScuola  at Fiera di Padova 7 – 9  of November / Asian Studies Group Padova & Confservizi Veneto.

Approaching Korea – new interest for TOPIK and career’s opportunities

We introduced korean language with our training programmes in Asian Studies Group just three years ago after long experience on teaching japanese and chinese.

I was pretty curious about Korea when I got opportunity to join a consulting board in behalf of american multinational company with branches in Italy and Austria, that has been involved on some troubles about management system and business culture with korean partners.

It was really useful  at that time my knowledge / experience about Japan and China  ‘cause I found a lot of connections in korean Jaybol-corporate system for exemple (that i needed to explain to groups of students / managers of the company)  with japanese keiretsu system up to the end of bubble economy as I considered really important the social function of confucianism in China, in particular when it started to characterize most of corporate’s dynamics due its influence about social relations (group’s dynamics, decision making etc)

Koreano Vol 1So when we decided to introduce Korea in Asian Studies Group it was for me like a “new love” that absolutely I wanted to discover and promote. The result was really impressive. We collected inquiries and requests to join our didactic programmes from dozens of different cities in Italy. That’s why we introduce also online classes with korean teachers because we couldn’t start with in-class activities everywhere in such short time.

After only one year we started to promote study travels in Seoul because everybody among our students shows us big intereste about going there and make their study more concrete and intensive, and actually we’ve already sent some groups of italian students in Korea.

Now we’re facing with new dimension of discovering Korea. There’s for sure a big portion of Korea-lovers that are more into pop culture (like pop music, drama, movies) and they represent a good target to introduce how Korean language is, as they always confirm with passion and happiness our study travel’s solution with great participation; but honestly the big challange for us (as Studies Centre and Consulting Firm) is represented by well framed target of university students and professionals whom are more into international certifications of korean language (TOPIK) and job placements in Korea.

There are also some italians whom already got personal professional experiences there with mixed results (somebody s enthusiastic, somebody else more embarassed for some businesses managed probably on bad way with korean partners that probably are not Key Opinion Leaders in their field or position).

As we started to build a service that could offer a concrete tool to prepare TOPIK and to join internship or master / bachelor courses in Korea we faced with too much disparate levels and programs (sometimes withouth specific didactic aim or  any well organized course for bachelor or master provided in our country).

At the same time when I tried to introduce some B2b solutions  to Chambers of Commerce in Italy in cooperation with organization in Korea (KOTRA is pretty interested and dynamic recently about promotion and introduction of opportunities of investments in Korea) I got again the perception that Korea as destination for business and international relations still needs social awarness about its identity and national profile etc.

chaebolAs I introduced to Consul Koh recently during the meeting I joined at Korean Consulate in Milan, now it’s really time to explain to european students and young professional what does Korea represent as destination for study, specialization, working opportunities and cross cultural integration and how we need them for mutual business and concrete joint-programmes for bilateral relations.

We’re really happy to offer some occasions of discussion, learning and cultural promotion in Asian Studies Group in Milan durin del Korea Culture Week from 23 of september. We’re going to provide some open – lessons of korean language, we’ll introduce our students and we’ll tal about study experiences in Korea and we’l be glad to introduce bachelor or specialization’s opportunities as offered by universities in Korea. We really like also to start official preparation’s course for TOPIK sessions in Italy as lot of our members asked us in Rome and Milan.

Probably not so many people remember that but some month ago the has been signed a new agreement for comemrcial bilateral relations between Europe and Korea – It represents really a new dymension for international cooperation and for business ventures between EU and Korea. But I absolutely think that institutional dynamics must be reinforced by social awarness. To boost korean culture and language could have a really important function about that.

You have smart ideas for business? Make them reality! The opportunity comes from Hong Kong

I’m not a dreamer you know. As business developer the first thing I’m used to take care is the feasibility of our entrepreneurship.  Sometimes I have to face with great concepts that cannot reach expected results as fixed on business plan, cause they’re lacking of co-investiments or connections to improve business appeal of the project.

It’s not just a problem with marketing strategy or general management (of course they must run well from the beginning of the venture), sometimes it’s because it’s not easy to approach the right network of experts, of operators and right developers that could play the difference for us.

For young people one of most difficult step is represented by introduction of own business – idea among personalities  who count for the field we’re going to invest.

Institutions seem also pretty far away than being present on supporting step by step our investiment (little or big whatever it’s gonna be) and usually we’ll finish to consider our “smart idea” like an illusion, and at the same time “doing business” will appear  really inconsistent or unreachable by common people.

So, that’s why i consider the project called “Start Me Up” introduced recently by Invest in Hong Kong as real opportunity for whom want to present smart projects still never actualized and get them on good selection (sometimes professional suggestions can help us on understanding the right way to direct our energies before being mistaken)

The proposal promoted by specialized office for foreign investments of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region consist of selection of 12 projects concerning innovative business solutions applied in HK or in other countries as introductory step of business (so they will also accept candidates with some ventures already ongoing but it’s important being at initial steps and not into high profits already).

The programme will check the details of each project considering the concept, the prototype (if necessary), then the early revenue and the breakeven and profit phases. It’s interesting cause the commission will not judge following common business criteria according with usual well detailed business plan, but they will also consider other important elements as basic fundamentals of planning a good venture as follows

Immagine

Finalists that are not based in Hong Kong will be provided with economy class travel (direct return flights to Hong Kong) and five nights’ accommodation. The also will pitch to potential business partners and investors in Hong Kong at the StartmeupHK Venture Forum on 5 December and a series of partnership matching sessions.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council will provide a business matching service to Finalists who are looking for business partners e.g. product/service suppliers, manufacturers, agents/distributors, buyers, licensees/franchisees. For finalists in the ICT sector, Cyberport will provide a one-year basic service subscription to the Cyberport Collaboration Centre, which provides business support and facilitates partnerships and technology and talent transfer. The Hong Kong Productivity Council will offer technical consultancy advice.

Our Chamber of Commerce in Italy, following dispositions issude by regional institutions, often provide some funds or opportunity to oin some development’s programmes (even if usually we face only with vouchers for reimbursement for international exhibition), but as I’ve already said lot of times, i think that Ideas and Energies need specific knowledges to grow up on the right way and these contents and concrete orientation must be offered into projects that can place side by side experts and supporting staff with entrepreneurs and investors.

Start Me Up HK well represents congruent exemple of professional support for doing business and it reminds perfectly that who invest (time, money, dreams and energies) is precious resource for community…

So let’s stop thinking that being internationals means only to join to international exhibitions… such mentality will not guide into concrete environment that will be useful to make our ideas real business (really connected with professional network that counts)

Shanghai Jiaotong University was looking for new partners… Found good one in Australia! Milan Expo 2015 needs to boost relations on global frameworks

Jiaotong Daxue is pretty famous in China among professionals working on education fields as for those are into business community in China.  A lot of white collars working for big companies in Shanghai got bachelor or master degree at Jiaotong Univ (university for technologies and communication studies)

I’ve been pretty sure that SJTU was looking for high level’s partners ‘cause universities in China (and also in most of eastern asia countries) are always really interested to strengthen own notoriety with agreements signed with foreign universities; the best for chinese university is represented by offering to their students opportuities of international exchanges, internship programmes and research activity boosted into specific twinning sessions with other centres or  countries.

The recent news talk about important agreement between Shanghai & Sydney for the joint programme that introduce technical partnership of SJTU and University of New South Wales. According with speakers in representation of the two universities, this partnership represents a real connection for the realization of that we could consider as Asian Century!

16_UNSW SJTU_Dinner

That’s how Australia seems feeling like more asian country recently… in occasion of development of that they have definied “Asian Century”.  (sure the history of immigration in Australia well identify the presence of chinese in the history of population boom of the country)

The partnership will include research and development’s activities for the implementation of adoption  of Easy Access IP,   that represents an innovative alternative adopted by UNSW comparing with usual US-centric model of patenting and research commercialisation. The twinning programme represented also the righ oportunity to create common fund to invest mutually in  materials engineering, computer science and biotechnology.

Now, I think that our academies in Italy have already a lot to share concerning technology transfers, researches and IT tools and in the last decades we reached lot of improvement on this field (in particular biotechnology also and material egineering), but as we ‘re getting great results, at the same time we’re keeping high skepticism about chinese conduct on respecting our “discoveries”.

I think that everybody is working with chinese well knows that if you leave your counterpart free to get preminence ‘cause you don’t show any interest on cultivating the relation (in particular taking on it with formal and institutional approach) probably you’ll lose not only your face and credibility but also you’ll allow them to manage situations and contents on autocratic way.

Now, Milan Expo 2015 represents the prosecution of Shanghai Expo 2010..  so I don’t feel really comfortable with reading several news about joint – programmes (not only about academies but also for that concerns industries, funds, banking etc) signed between Shanghai and some new entries in the “chinese network” when we can assume something like a reasonable priority to show our potentiality and appeal in such issues.  Sure it’s not a problem of City of Milan, but political systems and whole institutions should consider that their presence in direct confrontation with chinese partners is fundamental to get accepted according with well known rules of doing business in China…

Please I don’t want to introduce “guanxi” ‘s meanings anymore… right? I think that business relations between China and Italy are well structured and chinese community in our country is investing a lot also attending to our universities before going back to motherland and introduce such expertins on chinese market as well.. We should follow the australian way probably, where China is the biggest two-way trading partner due to its proximity as migrants from China jumped a fifth to nearly 30,000 out of Australia’s total annual intake of 168,685. They are skilled immigrants whom can deliver significant benefits as the Chinese immigrants contribute to economic growth and their relative youth offsets some of the impacts of an ageing labour force in Australia

Well done Sydney! We should imitate your vigorous approach on taking care such dynamics.

So.. Let’s start thinking widely and globally… or EXPO probably will lose the real function to aggregate skills and opportunities on making these skills concrete start for international relations
